Annavaram Temple Guide – Satyanarayana Swamy – Timings, Poojas, and History

Annavaram Temple is one of the most popular holy shrines of the country and is the second most popular pilgrimage after the Tirupati Temple in Andhra Pradesh. The Satyanarayana Swamy Temple in Annavaram has been built in the Dravidian style. The richness and glory of Lord Satyadeva, the temple’s deity, is described widely in the Revakhanda of the Holy Skandhapuranam.

In Annavaram Temple, Lord Satyadeva sits with his consort Shri Anantha Lakshmi on one side and Lord Siva on the other side. The Lord took his abode on the Ratnagiri Mountain, named after Ratnakara who was the son of Meru, the holy king of the mountains. The Sri Satyanarayana Swamy at Annavaram is followed by the sacred Pampa River which is touching the feet of the hill as is the case with all Divyakshetrams.

Lord Satyadeva is the God of truth and he showers his eternal blessings on all humankind in his beautifully manifested form in the form of the divine trinity which is called Hari Hara Hiranyagarbhathrimurtyatmaka. Therefore, the temple is the only ones attracting pilgrims from both the Vishanava and Saiva Hindu religion.

The Veeravenkatasathya Narayana swami is the main temple on the hill dedicated to Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy. This is a temple of Sri Rama and there are shrines of Vanadurge and Kanaka Durga around. The Grama Devatha (village deity) temple is located in the village foot of the hill.

Annavaram Temple History

According to legend, Raja i.e. Ramarayanam was the then zamindar of the Gorasa and the Kirlampudi estates near Samalkot since he was ordained by Lord in his dream. He then traced the idol on the hill and worshiped and installed it at this spot on Sravanasuddhavidiya in the Telugu year khara 1891.

The temple was constructed on the hill and the Bay of Bengal situated at 11 miles is visible from the hill and row of the majestic Eastern Ghats is visible on other side. The hills and the Pampa River encircle Ratnagiri from all sides. The main hillock is about 300 feet above the sea level and there are about 460 well-laid stone steps that lead to the top.

The main temple has been constructed like a chariot that has four wheels at each corner. The main temple’s front has the modern architecture including a Kalyanamantapa. Down the way, there is a Ramalaya and then there are shrines of Vana Durga which is held in veneration and the Devi is believed to be seen there in the nights according to the holy precincts that a perpetually guard the lord.

Significance of Annavaram Temple

According to the Agni Purana and the Hindu mythology, any temple’s akriti is the manifestation of its Prakriti.  In the ancient texts, the idea is developed and the Slipasastra is based on this principle. The temple’s wall and Vimana should be constructed to remind the devotee of the universe while the supreme spirit is represented by the deity inside who is the core of the entire universe.

These texts believe that the chariot is a symbol of seven lokas which lie underneath and the seven lokas that lie above along with garbhalaya of the lord rule hearts and center that rules over the entire universe.

The Annavaram Temple has been constructed based on these ideas. The temple’s front side depicts the chariot, the Meru is on the floor and the pillar is at the center. The idols at tope are constructed to bring to life the idea that Lord remains at the centre but it also permeates entire universe.

The wheels depict both the Sun and Moon and serve as a reminder us that the Jaggernaut completely moves on wheels of time and this cycle goes on forever. The Annavaram temple satisfies the devotees’ ritualistic values and spiritual aspirations.

There is a dial on the north side of temple’s compound that shows Indian standard time which is easy to calculate. A Mandapam is constructed round the main temple and a Kalyana mandapam on the lower level, that provides space to conduct about a thousand Satyanarayan Vrathams at one time and 500 Vrathams can be conducted by the side of Ramalya.

The foundation of a Galigopuram has been laid opposite to the Kalyanamantapam by left side which lies to the south of the compound wall.

The annavaram temple has also installed NavaGrahams and a bigger temple might be built for them in future. Down the steps, there are office rooms, guesthouse, a Choultry and open-air theatre used for HariKathas. The walls of the Vratha halls and the open air theatre have been painted with figures that represent the story of the deity Satyanarayana Swamy and his devotee called Sadhuvu.

A shed for tonsure ceremony, the Kesakhandanasalahas been built on the eastern side of the temple. A new kitchen is also present behind the main temple where the priests prepare Naivedyam for the lord. Another kitchen prepares Prasadam.

The idol of the main deity is 13 feet high and is in cylindrical form. The base of the idol is in the lower sanctum that represents Lord Brahma and the idol’s top situated in upper sanctum that represents lord Vishnu. The idol’s middle portion represents Lord Siva. This image that represents the 3 Lords in a single idol i.e. the Trimurtis-Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva is of great attraction.

One of the most popular temples in Andhra Pradesh, a unique yantra based on Tripadvibhuti Narayan Upanishad exists here the shrine is constructed in two storeys, the lower one containing the yantra and upper one housing vigrahas of the lord. The idol is about 4 meter high is in cylindrical form.

The base in the lower sanctum represents Lord Vishnu and the middle portion represents Lord Shiva. The image of the deity forming a single idol and representing the Hindu trinity is of unique attraction.

  • Many Poojas are conducted throughout the day by the temple priests and Abhishekas are performed by the devotees at Rs. 100/- per each ticket in the Yantralayam.

Festivals Celebrated here

Ekadashi is a very auspicious occasion for the annavaram temple as this is the best day to perform the Satya Narayan Vratham. Hindus have been performing the Shri Satyanarayana Vratham for ages throughout India.

The vratham is known to bring wealth, prosperity, education, and offspring. A number of pilgrims visit the temple from far and near and the daily average attendance of the temple is two thousand. Ekadashi is a very auspicious occasion for this vratham, but the individual devotees also perform this vratham on any convenient day. The vratham has become all the more popular due to the experience narrated in stories and also due to the legends and observations of daily life.

The vratham has an important fable according to which Sage Narada was once very much distressed about the immense misery of men in this world. He prayed to Lord Vishnu to suggest a way out. The Lord told him about the Satyanarayana Vratham and he said that this would relieve all men of the troubles.

The vratham was also useful to gain worldly prosperity and to achieve salvation after death. Lord narrated that a pious Brahmin from Banaras had performed this magical vratham first. Other people who had performed the Vratham and had benefitted were King Ulkamukha from Bhadrasila Nagaram, Emperor Tungadhwaja, and a Vaishya business man named Sadhuvu.

The community of Gollas in the kingdom of Tungadhwaja and a poor woodcutter from Banaras had performed this vratham. They were all blessed by the great Lord Satya Narayana Swamy (who is Vishnu himself) and they achieved all they desired in life.

This vratham has hence caught fascination of the millions of devotees who have heard the stories and offer respect to the Lord. These stories are easy to understand for the common people as well as within the understanding of the scholars. Thus, all classes of people can perform the vratham and this has popularized it among them as people have been benefitted by the vratham.

According to the texts of the Vratham, Sadhuvu’s daughter Kalavathi had left the prasadam of Lord Satya Narayan to see her husband and thus the husband drowned in the boat in which he was travelling. Thus, Kalavathi was grieved and decided to kill herself. Sadhuvu was extremely grieved to see his only daughter preparing for sahagamana. He thus realized that only Lord Satyanarayana could come to his relief and thus, he fervently prayed to him.

The lord revealed that this catastrophe was inflicted upon them as Kalavathi did not take her prasadam in the hurry to go to her husband. Thus, Kalavathi rushed home and took the prasadam and when she hurried back to the seashore, she saw her husband Ratnakara who was safe on the shore. She then told him all about the Lord and upon hearing this her husband was so much impressed that he heart fully prayed to the Lord and the Lord’s blessings changed the spot  into Ratnagiri hill on which the Lord took his permanent abode.

According to legend, the River Pampa running by the hill is the form of the devotee Kalavathi who had melted with ecstasy at the grace of the Lord and of her husband’s achievement and thus began to flow as Pampa River.

Poojas and Rituals at Annavaram Temple

The Sathya Narayan Vratham is performed on Ekadashi and has a specific procedure. First Lord Ganesha and the Navagrahas are offered respect and then the image of the deity is placed on a clean spot.

The Lord is appeased through chants, flowers, and prasadam that includes fruits, sweet wheat flour, and sweets are offered to the deity. The story is then narrated and Aarti is performed at the end. After the prayer, a small lamp is lit near the idol is known as the Aratika. The devotees take prasadam at the conclusion of the pooja.

How to Reach Annavaram Temple – By Rail, Road, and Air

Annavaram is a village situated close to River Pampa in the east Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It is situated about 32 kms from Pithapuram, 51 km from Kakinada and 72 kms from Rajahmundry. By Train: Many trains that pass between Kolkata and Vijayawada stop at the Annavaram station. One can also stop at Visakhapatnam.

Sheetla Mata Mandir Gurgaon is a major Hindu pilgrimage. Lots of pilgrims come here every day to offer prayer and seek blessings from the Goddess. This temple is located in Gurgaon, Haryana. Sheetala Devi is a Goddess which is being worshipped by people of different parts. People from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, North India, West Bengal worship her. She is better known as pox-goddess. This temple is situated near a pond at Gurgaon village. Sheetala Devi Mandir is located in the suburb of Guru Dronacharya’s birth place in the state of Haryana. There is a large crowd of devotees throughout the year except during the month Shravana (July-August). During the month of Chaitra (March-April), this place looks like another Kumbh-Mela. Sheetla Mata Mandir Gurgaon History

  • There are many stories behind this Sheetla Mata Mandir Gurgaon. One such story is that Goddess Durga has incarnated as little Katyayani. Katyayani was the daughter of the sage who all these demons who were destroying the earth with their evil and wicked power. Sheetala Devi in her real form as Goddess Durga killed the demons that were sent by Kaalkeya.
  • The demon of fever, Jwarasur, started spreading an incurable disease to all the childhood friends of Katyayani. He spread diseases like cholera, dysentery, measles, smallpox etc. It was Katyayani who cured some of her friends but to relieve the world from all sorts of fever and disease, she took the form of Goddess Sheetala.
  • Each of her four hand had something or the other to protect the world from fever and destroy the demon. Her hands held a short broom, winnowing fan, jar of cooling water and a cup. With her power, Sheetala Devi cured all the diseased children.
  • After all the children were cured, Katyayani asked her friend Batuk to go out and face the demon of fever, Jwarasur. The battle happened between the young Batuk and Jwarasur, resulting the death of young Batuk. Batuk, lying on the ground, started disappearing and magically faded into dust.
  • On seeing Batuk disappeared, Jwarasur became shocked and started wondering where he went. Little did Jwarasur know, Batuk assumed the form of an aweful male figure. This person had three eyes, four arms and a garland of skulls. He had axe, sword, Trishool and demon head. He was black in color. His eyes were blazing with fury, and his hair flowing. He was wearing tiger skin. Batuk took the ferocious form of Lord Shiva, Bhairav.
  • Bhairav informs the demon of fever that he is the servant of Goddess Durga. They had a long discussion which later converted into battle. During the battle, Jwarasur created many demons but Lord Shiva managed to kill everyone. At the end, Bhairav started wrestling with Jwarasur and end up killing him with his Trident.

Significance of Sheetla Mata Mandir Gurgaon

  • Sheetala is a sanskrit term which means ‘one who cools’. This Goddess have the various name and is worshipped by these different names in the subcontinent.

A huge fair is organized for this occasion and several musical events and programmes are also staged. Devotees celebrate this festival with immense joy and devotion. It is believed that by keeping the vrat on this chosen day, they will be prevented from several deadly diseases. On the day of Sheetala Ashtami according to the traditions, the families do not lit the fire for the purpose of cooking. They, therefore, prepare food a day in advance and consume the stale food on an actual day. It is only in Sheetala Ashtami that there is the unique custom of offering stale food to Goddess Sheetala.

Devotees get up early, before sunrise and take a bath. They visit the Sheetala Devi temple and worship the Goddess with ‘haldi’ and ‘bajra’. After performing the puja rituals they listen to the ‘Basoda Vrat Katha’. ‘Rabri’, ‘curd’ and other essential offerings are then made to Goddess Sheetala. People also take blessings from their elders. After offering the prepared food to the Goddess, rest of the food is eaten all day long as Prasad and is known as ‘Basoda’ in the local language. The food is also distributed among other devotees and also given to the poor and needy people. On this day reading ‘Sheetalashtak’ is also considered favourable.

What are the timings of Mantralayam Temple?

Everyday at 6:00 am the cleansing of Raghavendra Brindavan takes place with holy water. During the Mangala Aarti anointment and adornment with precious jewels and clothes are done. The general timing of the temple is from 6 am to 8 pm. Here are the timings of Mantralayam Temple:

Mantralayam Temple of Andhra Pradesh is dedicated to Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy, who lived during the 16th century

Sri Raghavendra Swamy is considered as an incarnation of Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Raghavendra Swamy was a devotee of Sri Moola Rama and Sri Panchamukhi Mukhya Prana Devaru. It is believed that the five faced Hanuman gave darshan to the saint while he was performing penance at a place called Panchamukhi.

The teachings of this great saint are based on the Vaishnava cult, Dvaita philosophy and preaching of Madhvacharya.

Before becoming a saint, Sri Raghavendra was a family man with a wife and a son. On the day of his transformation, his wife wished to see him for the last time and hence came running to the mutt. But in her hurry, she felt in an abandoned well and died.

As it was an untimely death of her with the desire unfulfilled, she became a ghost and came to visit the saint in the mutt. Sri Raghavendra Swamy sensed her presence and sprinkled holy water, relieving her from the cycles of birth and death.

Sri Raghavendra is believed to have done many miracles in his lifetime.

Significance of Mantralayam Temple

Mantralayam Raghavendra Swamy Temple is not only a memorial of the saint but also worships Lord Hari, Vayu and Rayaru.

Mantralayam Raghavendra Swamy Temple houses three spectacular chariots, made with sandalwood and adorned with fresh and bright flowers.

Every day the deities are placed on the chariots and a wonderful procession round the temple takes place.

Mantralayam Temple Dress Code

As per the Mantralayam temple dress code, men should wear dhoti and no shirt (only Angavastram). Women devotees should wear a sari or salwar kameez. Devotees will not be allowed to enter the Mantralayam temple wearing informal attire like jeans, shorts or T-shirts.

To maintain the tranquility, devotees are expected to speak in a low voice and walk in queues. Some other guidelines which are followed at this Mantralayam temple are:

  • Devotees are suggested not to wear headgears, cooling glasses.
  • Men are requested to remove their shirt and hold it in their hands while paying the visit to Rayaru, while women are expected to be in traditional wear, like the sari.
  • Outside eatables are not permitted within the temple complex.
  • Last but not the least; devotees are expected to bath in the holy waters of River Tungabhadra (wetting their hair) before offering puja at the temple.

Festivals celebrated at Temple

Mantralayam Temple celebrates various kinds of festivals throughout the year. Devotees can offer various kinds of seva to fulfil the good wishes and for the well-being of the family members.

  • The Maharathostavam, also known as the car festival is celebrated with great pomp and glamour at Mantralayam Raghavendra Swamy Temple.
  • Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy Aradhanostavam is another famous festival of the shrine.
  • The Dhanurmasa month is of great significance at the Raghavendra Swamy Temple. Besides regular worship and rituals, special events like Tulasi Archana and Hastodaka, Rathotsava and Maha Mangal aarti takes place during this month.
  • Devotees can request for special seva or endowments. There are lifetime seva or endowments which take place on holy days and again every year after the seva; the fund for the seva is raised from the fixed deposit of the seva that the devotee deposits the first time.
  • These special endowment worships are not performed on Ekadasi, Grahana or Eclipse days and on Sri Krishna Janmasthami.
  • Devotees can also offer seva without visiting Mantralayam Temple personally. They can send cheques and drafts for the seva and the same shall be performed on behalf of the devotees.

Mantralayam Sevas and Poojas

Besides the special endowments, there are regular worships done at Mantralayam Raghavendra Swamy Temple.

  • Regular worship of Sri Moola Ramadevara is done if HH Sri Swamiji is present at Mantralayam Temple.
  • Among the daily seva, the Dinaika Sampoorna Annadana Seva refers to the food endowment that a devotee can opt for. He or she can pay a fixed amount and the prasada for the day will be funded with that amount.

How to reach

  • By Air: The air base at Hyderabad is the nearest airport to the temple. It is 236 kms from Mantralayam. After disembarking the flight, you can rent cabs or board buses to reach the temple.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station to the Raghavendra Swamy Temple is the Mantralayam Road. This railway station is about 12 kms from Mantralaya. Some of the local trains that can take you to the temple are the Dadar Madras Mail and the Bombay Mail. The Udayan Express from Bangalore also stops at Mantralaya. Mantralaya lies on the railway route of Mumbai-Chennai, Delhi-Bangalore, Hyderabad-Tirupathi. It is an hour journey from the station to Mantralayam Temple. Significance of Konark Sun Temple –

  • The Sun Temple complex consists of two main parts, a dance pavilion Natya mandapa, and an assembly hall Jaganmohan with Pidha Deula roof on the same platform as the remains of the shrine’s Rekha Deula tower.
  • The audience hall is the most well-preserved structure, and it dominates the temple complex. Its entrance has been sealed and the interior filled with sand to prevent it from collapsing.

Legends attached to Konark Sun Temple

The first legend is attached to the ages of Mahabharatha –

  • According to it, Samba, son of Lord Krishna has incurred a curse by Narad and became a leper.
  • Samba practiced austere penance for 12 years to please Lord Surya.
  • Once while bathing in the river Chandrabhag he found an image of Surya on lotus pedestal holding fully bloomed lotuses in both hands.
  • This image was consecrated in the temple and with the blessing of Sun God, he was cured of his leprosy.

Another famous legend that describes the construction of Konark Temple is that of Dharmpad a 12 yr old boy who sacrificed his life to save twelve thousand craftsmen. The legend goes as –

  • Dharmpad grew up with his mother in a small unknown village in Orissa in the 12th century. Right from his childhood, he was interested in architecture and crafts and being the son of a great temple architect, Bisu Maharana.
  • Dharmpad had access to all the manuscripts describing the details of temple construction. By the time he turned 12, he had mastered the art of Odiya temple architecture.
  • But he was eager to see his father who was away since his birth and therefore went out in search of his father. After a long and arduous journey, he reached a lonely beach where a magnificent but incomplete construction was going on.
  • He realized that this was the place where his father was building the Konark Sun temple. He rushed on to meet his father, wept and kissed him, but immediately knew that something was troubling his father.
  • King Narsingdeva had already announced that if Konark Sun Temple was not ready till the next morning all the craftsmen would be beheaded. Bisu maharana felt responsible for the upcoming deaths.
  • Although Konark Temple had already taken 12 years to be built, it was still incomplete. The final stone or the Kalash was yet to be installed at the topmost part of the Konark Temple. All the efforts of the crew were in vain.
  • Dharmpad who had studied temple architecture immediately perceived where the fault lay and knew how to surmount the problem.
  • By midnight, as the moon shone bright, the Kalash was finally put in the place and lives of the 12000 craftsmen were saved.
  • But Dharmpad had to sacrifice his life, for if the king got to know of the failure of the craftsmen and their defeat at the hands of a mere 12-year-old, he would surely kill them all.
  • He made his way up to Konark Temple top which has had completed and jumped into the sea as the first ray of light shone.

The History of Konark Sun Temple

  • Built-in 13th CE by king Narsimhadeva I of Eastern Ganga Dynasty, Konark Temples history is concealed in myths and legends that give us reasons for the construction and destruction of the temple.
  • It is believed that Narsimdeva wanted to build this temple to commemorate his victory over Tughan Khan, a governor of Bengal appointed by Nasiruddin Mahmud ( A Delhi sultan) in the year 1243 AD.
  • Dedicated to Surya the Sun God, it was made as his colossal cosmic chariot with 12 pairs of wheels pulled by seven horses but sadly in present only one of the horses remains.
  • The temple is believed to celebrate the glory of the Ganga Dynasty and the king’s triumph over Muslim rulers of Bengal. Its many sculptures depicting war scenes and the king’s activities support this.
  • 200 years later, during the reign of the Marathas in Odisha in the 18th century, a Maratha holy man found the temple abandoned and covered in overgrowth.
    The Marathas relocated the temple’s Aruna Stambha pillar with Aruna the charioteer seated atop it to the Lion’s Gate entrance of the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
  • British archeologists became interested in the temple in the 19th century, and they excavated and restored sections of it in the 20th century. 
  • However, it remained a mystery as to how the temple was built until the 1960s when an old palm-leaf manuscript was discovered. Its full set of 73 leaves comprehensively chronicled the temple’s planning and 12 years of construction from 1246 to 1258.
  • The temple was last documented as being intact in the 16th century by Abul Fazal in his account of Emperor Akbar’s administration, Ain-i-Akbari. 
  • The information is documented in a book, published in 1972, called New Light on Sun Temple of Konarka by Alice Boner, S. R. Sarma, and R. P. Das.

The Unique Architecture of Konark Sun Temple

The brilliance of Konark Sun Temple lies in its architecture, ornamental decoration, and sculptural elements. These are concentrated on the exterior wall. The interior is generally plain and featureless.

  • Konark Temple is the pride of the Orissan style of architecture. It is in the shape of the gigantic chariot in which the Sun God rides across heaven.
  • The chariot has twelve pairs of wheels, each about 10 ft in diameter with a set of spokes elaborately carved.
  • Seven prancing horses are shown on either side of the steps to reach the entrance of Konark Temple.
  • The horses are conceived in a way to give the appearance of the Sun God himself driving the chariot while being in the garbgrih the sanctum sanctorum.
  • The wheels of Konark Temple are sundials. The shadows of the spokes can be used to calculate the time of the day and night accurately.
  • The alignment of the Konark Temple is east-west. It consists of sanctum sanctorum (Garba Graha).The tower of which is called Rekha -Deul( curvilinear Shikhar or tower) rising to a height of 229ft. This tower was struck by lightning, hence, it is now in dilapidated condition.
  • In front of sanctum sanctorum is Jagmohan (frontal porch, maha mandap) with the pyramidal roof (Pidha-Deul). The height of Pidha-Deul is 128ft.
  • The top of Rekha-Deul and Pidha-Deul were crowned by Amalek and Stupi (a ribbed disc-shaped stone). Located in front of Jagmohan is the Natyamandap. Bhog Mandap detached from the main complex has been aligned with the main temple.
  • Konark Temple proper stands on huge platforms depicting richly embellished stone chariot.
  • Konark Temple was originally built of Khondalite stone since it was a locally available pink colored stone with yellow streaks.
  • Another unique feature of Konark Temple is the use of iron plates in between every two stones. Massive iron beams have beams used to construct higher floors of Konark Temple.
  • A 52-ton magnet was used to create the peak of the main temple. It is said that the entire structure has tolerated the harsh conditions, especially of the sea because of this magnet.
  • It is believed that due to the attraction of the magnet the main idol of the temple remained suspended in the air. The magnet and idol do not exist anymore. There are various theories about the removal of the magnet and about the missing idol.
  • The architecture of Konark Temple was such that the early rays of morning sun illuminated the image of Sun god in the sanctum sanctorum.
  • The entrance of Konark Temple is guarded by two lions crushing elephants, each elephant, in turn, lies on top of a human body.
  • The lion symbolizes pride and elephants symbolize wealth. Symbolically this represents that the human being is crushed by pride and wealth.
  • Thousands of images adorn the temple’s exterior wall. These images include deities, celestial figures, and human musicians, dancers and lovers.
  • The base of Konark Temple wall and the roof also depicts human, divine and semi-divine figures, often in sensuous poses and postures.
  • There are also images of animals, birds, foliage, warriors on horseback as well as geometrical patterns depicted in relief and also in image-in-the-round.

Archaeological Value and Preservation of Konark Sun Temple –

  • The Sun Temple, Konark is protected under the National Framework of India by the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act (1958) and its Rules (1959).
  • The Archeological Survey of India continued the works after it took over responsibility for the temple in 1932.
  • The temple was subsequently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Another round of extensive restoration works commenced in 2012 and is ongoing.
  • Other relevant protective legislation includes the Forest Act, Konârak Development Act and the notified the Council Area Act. 
  • Under the AMASR Act, a zone 100 meters outside the property and a further zone 200 meters outside the property constitute, respectively, prohibited and regulated zones for development or other similar activity that may have adverse effects on the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. 
  • All conservation programs are undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India through its national, regional and local representatives.
  • There are five management-related plans: safety, environment, master planning, environmental development, and tourism.
  • World Heritage funding was received to carry out an assessment of structural stability.

Fall of the Konark Sun Temple

There are various theories and speculations that give reasons for the fall of this magnificent monument.

  • Some believe that due to the early death of King Narasimhadeva, the builder of the Konark Temple, the construction was left half done. As a result, it remained incomplete and collapsed in the due course of time.
  • Others opine that Konark Temple had lost its sanctity because Dharmpad, son of the chief architect, committed suicide just after placing the crowing stone on the top of the temple tower.
  • Earthquake and thunderstruck may also be the reason for the fall of this magnificent structure.
  • Another theory relates to the removal of load stone. It is believed that due to the magnetic effects of the magnet in the temple the compass of the ships was showing deflected directions to the vessels passing through the Konark sea.
  • This resulted in heavy damage to the ships. So to make the shipping safe the Muslim voyagers removed the loadstone from Konark Temple. This stone worked as the central stone keeping all other stones of the temple wall in balance. Subsequent to the displacement of the load-stone, the structure weakened and the temple walls fell down in due course of time.
  • Invasion by Kalapahad, a Muslim ruler in 1508 is also given as the reason for the destruction of Konark temple. Kalapahad managed to displace Dadhinauti (arch stone) and hence the temple collapsed.

Chandrabhag Mela: celebrated on Magh Saptami in February is the most popular festival of Konark temple.

  • This festival celebrates the Birth of Sun God.
  • A stone thrown from Konark beach lies in a sacred magical pond where Samba was cured of leprosy. For this reason, every year during the full moon phase of Magha a big religious festival is celebrated that is popularly known as Chandrabhaga Mela or Magha Saptami Mela.

  • Sai Satya Vrata Pooja: The special Pooja is performed free of cost once in three months in the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Complex on the Purnima day (full moon day). 108 couples can take part in the Pooja at one time. According to an incident in Sri Sai Satcharita, a Tuberculosis patient by the name of Bhimaji Patil was cured by Sri Sai Baba. After being cured, he started a tradition of worshipping Sai Baba as Satyanarayan. The Pooja has been renamed to Sai Satya Vrata Pooja.
  • Sai Satcharitra Parayan: The reading of the book Sai Satcharitra takes place once every month in the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Complex. The reading of the book starts at 8 AM in the morning and usually concludes before either the Dhoop or the Shej Aarti.
  • Bhupali: The Bhupali Aarti is performed at 4:15 AM every day. It is the first in a series of Aartis and Bhajans that are sung in praise of Sai Baba. The Aarti is composed of four songs and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.
  • Kakad Aarti: The Morning Aarti is called the Kakad Aarti and is performed between 4:30 AM to 5:00 AM. In Kakad Aarti, a piece of cloth is dipped in ghee and then lit on fire to perform the Aarti. The Aarti is performed to wake up Sai Baba and get his blessings.
  • Mangal Snaan: Shri Sai Baba is bathed in holy water at 5:05 AM in the Samadhi mandir.
  • Satyanarayana Pooja: The Pooja is performed between 7 AM to 12 PM. The Pooja is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees can perform the Pooja by paying a nominal amount at the Pooja counter.
  • Madhyan Aarti: The afternoon Aarti takes place from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM. Several songs are sung in praise of Sai Baba and his disciples.
  • Dhoop Aarti: The evening Aarti is performed at Sunset for 20 minutes every day. The Aarti is divided into eight different song sequences, each praising Sai Baba and his virtues.
  • Shej Aarti: The night Aarti is performed for 20 minutes at 10:30 PM to 10:50 PM. After the Aarti, a shawl is wrapped around the idol of Sai Baba and a Rudraksha mala is hung around his neck. The mosquito net is lowered and a glass of water is kept near the idol.
  • On Thursdays, a ‘Palki’ procession takes place at around 9.15 PM, from Samadhi Mandir to Dwarkamai and then to Chawri.

Darshan is stopped when the aarti is being conducted.

The significance of the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is that both Hindus and Muslims can worship the samadhi. Shri Sai Baba opposed the division of religion. He opposed discrimination based on religion. At the request of villagers, he raised the level of water in the well during the dry season to drink. He saved a 3-year-old girl from drowning after she fell into the well. The villagers saw her suspended in mid-air and pulled her out.

In the mosque, Sai Baba maintained a sacred fire which is referred to as a dhuni, from which he gave sacred ashes (‘Udhi’) to his guests before they left. The ash was believed to have healing powers. What is the history of Shirdi Sai Baba Temple?

Where did Sai Baba come from

According to history, the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple was established in the year 1922 to continue the teachings and services of Sri Sai Baba. The real name and the birthplace of Sai Baba are unknown.

He arrived at Shirdi at the age of sixteen. The name “Sai” was given to him upon his arrival at Shirdi, by a local priest named Mahalsapati. He recognized Sai Baba as a Muslim saint and greeted him with the words ‘Ya Sai!’, meaning ‘Welcome Sai!’. Sai or Sayi is a Persian title given to Sufi saints. The word “Baba” means “father; grandfather; old man; sir” in most Indian and Middle Eastern languages. Thus, Sai Baba denotes “holy father”, “saintly father” or “poor old man”.

The followers of Sai Baba believe that Sai is an acronym of the Sanskrit term “Sakshat Eshwar“, a reference to God. Sakshat means “incarnate” and Eshwar means “God”.

He initially stayed under a neem tree at the Khandoba Temple. He remained silent and meditated for long periods of time. He received several visitors like Mahalsapati and Appa Jogie. He stayed for three years in Shirdi and then disappeared. It is believed that he was with the army of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi during the Mutiny of 1857.

It is believed that Sai Baba returned to Shirdi in 1858. His manner was withdrawn and he often meditated for long hours. He was later convinced to take up residence in an old mosque, where he lived a solitary life. He received visitors in the mosque, later named as the Dwarkamai and gave them sacred ash having healing properties when they left. He performed the services of Hakim for the village.

Sai Baba believed that charity is the ultimate way to win God’s grace. He led a simple life and encouraged the concept of sharing with people. He emphasized that people should be treated with respect and should be welcomed in their homes. He asked devotees to give food, water, clothes, money, and a place to stay generously to the poor.

The life history and philosophy of Sri Sai Baba are recorded in the Sai Satcharitra. The manuscript is the work of Shri Hemadpant, an ardent devotee of Baba. It is said that Sai Baba himself blessed the book and wanted his teachings to be spread around by the medium of books.

  • Ram Navami: The festival is celebrated at the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in March or April. The festival is celebrated with a lot of zest and excitement. According to a story, Gopalrao Gund in 1897 proposed to hold Urus (a Muslim festival to honour a saint) dedicated to Sai Baba to thank him for granting him the wish of a child after many years. Sai Baba agreed but asked him to celebrate it on Ram Navami. As a result, on this day, both Hindus and Muslims celebrate the function enthusiastically resulting in communal harmony. The flags of Dwarkamai are replaced on this day along with the sack of wheat kept there.
  • Guru Purnima: On the Full moon day of the month of July, the Guru Purnima is celebrated in Shirdi with much reverence and dedication. The day is dedicated to Guru and special poojas are performed to honour him and seek his blessings. Vyasa Pooja is held in honour of Ved Vyasa, the writer of the epic Mahabharata.
  • Vijayadashami: The day of Vijayadashami is also said to be the day that Shri Sai Baba left the mortal life for his heavenly abode. This day is also called Shri Sai Punyathithi. During this festival ‘Brahman Bhojan’ is arranged with Guru Dakshina (Donation to Guru). Pilgrims from all over India flock to Shirdi to pay their respects to Shri Sai Baba.

  • By Air: Aurangabad is the nearest airport to Shirdi. It is located at a distance of 144 km. Bus services are available from Aurangabad to Shirdi.
  • By Rail: Shirdi is well connected to all major cities in India. The station name at Shirdi is “Sainagar Shirdi” which has started operations since March 2009. Regular trains are available to the city from Chennai, Mumbai, Vishakapatnam, Secunderabad, and Mysore. The other main railway stations located nearby are Kopergaon (15 km), Nashik (119 km), Manmad (87 km), and Ahmednagar (83 km). Regular buses are available from these cities to Shirdi.
  • By Road: State transport buses are available from major cities in Maharashtra as well as from the surrounding states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamilnadu.

Accommodation at nominal rates is available. The Shirdi Sansthan Trust Reception Centre near the State Transport Bus Stand, where they provide proper guidance to the arriving devotees and also allocate rooms. Locker facilities are also available for luggage storage.

At the entrance to the temple is a large banyan tree which is mentioned in the ‘Shri Sai Satcharitra’ as the place where the bullock cart halted. It is now commemorated with a small shrine and ‘padukas’ at its base.
  • Gurusthan: The place is located under a neem tree where Sai Baba spent most of his time in his early stay in Shirdi. According to Sai Baba, his own “Guru” is buried beneath the tree and should not be disturbed. Beside the tree, one can see a pair of marble padukas on a pedestal, a Shivalinga, and a statue of Baba at the place.
  • Samadhi Mandir: The temple was initially constructed in the dedication of Lord Krishna. It is believed that Sai Baba advised Gopalrao Booty to construct a temple so that he can satisfy the needs of the people. With Sai Baba’s approval, they started the construction work on the temple in 1915. When Baba fell ill, he asked devotees to move him into the temple. He breathed his last on October 15, 1918. He was buried in the temple and an idol of his has been installed over it.
  • Dwarkamai: The small mosque where Sai Baba stayed has become the centre of attraction in Shirdi as it provides a glimpse of the spiritual life that he leads. One can visit the “Dhuni” or the “Perpetual Fire”, see the Kolamba.   • Chavadi: Chavadi is the place where Sai Baba would sleep on alternate days during the last decade of his life It played a major role at the beginning of the formal worship of Baba. Once Baba started sleeping at Chavadi, the custom arose of offering regular aarti to him on his arrival from the mosque. This was Shej (night) aarti. Later, Kakad (morning) aarti was offered when he woke up there.
  • The Lendi Gardens: This is the garden complex which was often visited by Sai Baba to meditate and contemplate on the worldly matters. One can visit the Nanda Deep – the perpetually burning Deep kept between two trees here.
  • Shani Shinganapur Temple: The village of Shinganapur in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra is home to the Shani Shinganapur Temple dedicated to Lord Shani (Personification of Saturn). An idol of Lord Shani made of black stone is placed in the temple to which devotees from all over the world pay their respects. The unique thing about the village is that none of the houses in the area have any doors. The strong belief is that Lord Shani will guard all homes against any mischief. The unique feature of the temple is that iron has not been used for constructing the temple.  The second temple is called Sheesh Mahal. It was built by the Shri Shanti Niwas Digambar Temple Committee. The temple is dedicated to Sri Shanti Niwas Maharaj l6th Teerthanka.
