Shankarajayanti is the birth day of Adi guru Shankaracharya who was the pioneer on advaita philosophy and Shankaracharya hill in Srinagar is one of the most important place where adi guru Shankaracharya mediated. In 2019 the program was held on May 9. Every year people from throughout the country visit Srinagar on Shankarajayanti with a mission , it is to pray for peace and national harmony and for strong nation. . He was born in Kerala 2528 years back. The saint travelled thousands of km from Kerala came to Kashmir to do meditation at Shankaracharya hill Srinagar to spread the message of peace to humanity. Even today this hill has wild bear and leopards, imagine the power of a saint who sat and mediated there without getting harmed by wild animals. How did the saint climb from the foot of the hill till the top where he mediated no dought he was a great trekker and first mountaineering expert of bharata. All these shows Adi guru was a physically fit and adventurous saint,

In 2019 Shankarajayanti Swami vishwathmananda SARASWATI from sunderbani ashram came along with 400 hundred of his followers and performed Abhishek for world peace. Several Purohit came from Kanchi mutt from Tamilnadu and performed homa, havan and Yagna for peace in the country. Ramakrishna mission Srinagar kept book stall on the teaching of rama Krishna paramahamsa to spread his message of universal brotherhood. Several displaced kashmiri Pandits led by ravinder pandita also came to pray for their peaceful return to the valley and they also prayed for the opening of Sharada Peeth in POK. The program was organised by Local business man Vidhu SHARMA who is staunch devotee of Shankaracharya. Program was given wide publicity, coordinated among the santh samaj, national leaders by team “one India strong india” led by mentor Bellur Laxminarayana and Paneendra kumar from Bangalore who are driving this mission from past six years. Shankaracharya hill temple is the most ancient Shiva temple in india. Shankaracharya hill is very sacred hill where many saints have meditated in the past. VIP who visited were Shri B V R Subramanyam Chief Secretary J&K , Shri KK Sharma advisor to J&K governor, Shri Skandan k advisor to J&K governor , evening a satsang was carried out at Sanathana dharama sabha at lal chowk. The satsang was carried out by Swami vishwathmananda SARASWATI from sunderbani ashram along with 16 more sawamis and 200 followers. Veda chanting for world peace was done by scholars from sunderbani and kanchi during the saatsang. swami also spoke about the life of Adi guru shankaracharya life which guide people to live in harmony with each other. The program received wide publicity from all sections of print , electronic and social media.

Sri Sri Ravishankar guruji had visited this temple few years back. Amarnath yatra starts and stops after performing a ritual here. many displaced kashmiri hindus also visit this temple on shankarajayanti. Even separatist call of their strike in Srinagar during shivaratri to facilitate smooth functioning of the program in srinagar in general and shankaracharya hill in particular. People know about Vishnodevi and Amarnath but this is the oldest temple of bharat which many people dont know. Lot of soldiers in srinagar from Army CRPF, ITBP , BSF visit the temple of this day and offer their prayers. Many local Kashmiri muslims also have great respect for this temple and few of them also visit the temple during these festivals because they feel it is part of their heritage.

Other festivals where many local people come here are on Shivaratri, Raksha Bhandhan, There are many Hindus is srinagar who are working in government offices who are from Jammu and many labourers from Bihar , these people visit during the festivals as it gives them lot of satisfaction.
